It was a great example of transformation of a Norman keep into a fortified manor.<br /><br />It and Tretower Castle, in Powys, are two of the best examples I found of complete medieval halls accessible to the public. I went in October and had them to myself so I could wander and dream. <br /> <br />At Tretower they still have sliding wooden shutters in the windows. It was so quiet that a pair of robins were having a territorial dispute in the great hall. It's round keep and bailey is separate from the fortified manor.
