Just thought you might like to know one of the two lanes leading to Sedgwick was a horse drawn tramway, copper shod horses (less chance of a spark) would haul carts from the gunpowder works. Take a closer look at the canal, it doesn't follow the route of least resistance, the original route was supposed to follow the route of the West Coast Railway, the gunpowder industry was thought to be so lucrative it was deemed worth tunnelling through the hill at Hincaster. There was also a gunpowder works at Gatebeck, take a look in the field behind crooklands hotel, the level line is what remains of a tramway, again carts pulled by copper shod horses, it ended at Wakefields Wharf over the field in front of the hotel.
